Why is sea blue?

The year 1921, Raman is returning to India after his first ever visit abroad. No airplanes in those days and so he had to travel by steamer. The journey to Bombay would take two days via Suez canal. To keep the passengers from getting bored, ship captain had arranged parties, games etc. Raman was least interested in it. Instead he spent all his time on watching the sea. He was fancied by deep blue color of sea. He wondered why it was so? Earlier Rayleigh had suggested that it was mere reflection of the blue sky. But Raman was not convinced. Raman came to conclusion that it was scattering of molecules which rendered blue color to sea. When he reached Bombay, he went straight to mail office and sent a letter to Nature about his observations and got it published.
