Quantum physicists win 2012 Physics Nobel prize
Serge Haroche of France and American David Wineland opened the door to new experiments in quantum physics by showing how to observe individual quantum particles while preserving their quantum properties.
A quantum particle is one that is isolated from everything else. In this situation, an atom or electron or photon takes on strange properties. It can be in two places at once, for example. It behaves in some ways like a wave. But these properties are instantly changed when it interacts with something else, such as when somebody observes it.
Working separately, the two scientists, both 68, developed "ingenious laboratory methods" that allowed them to manage and measure and control fragile quantum states, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.
"Their ground-breaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of superfast computer based on quantum physics," the academysaid. "The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time."
Haroche is a professor at the College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. Wineland is a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. The two researchers use opposite approaches to examine, control and count quantum particles, the academy said. Wineland traps ions - electrically charged atoms - and measures them with light, while Haroche controls and measures photons, or light particles.
Haroche said he was out walking with his wife when he got the call from Nobel judges. "I was in the street and passing a bench so I was able to sit down," Haroche told a news conference inStockholm by phone. "It's very overwhelming." He said his work in the realm of quantum physics could ultimately lead to unimaginably fast computers.

Final collapse of sea ice within four years!
As sea ice shrinks to record lows, Prof Peter Wadhams warns a 'global disaster' is now unfolding in northern latitudes

One of the world's leading ice experts has predicted the final collapse ofArctic sea ice in summer months within four years.
In what he calls a "global disaster" now unfolding in northern latitudes as the sea area that freezes and melts each year shrinks to its lowest extentever recorded, Prof Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University calls for "urgent" consideration of new ideas to reduce global temperatures.
In an email to the Guardian he says: "Climate change is no longer something we can aim to do something about in a few decades' time, and that we must not only urgently reduce CO2 emissions but must urgently examine other ways of slowing global warming, such as the variousgeoengineering ideas that have been put forward."
These include reflecting the sun's rays back into space, making clouds whiter and seeding the ocean with minerals to absorb more CO2.
Wadhams has spent many years collecting ice thickness data from submarines passing below the arctic ocean. He predicted the imminent break-up of sea ice in summer months in 2007, when the previous lowest extent of 4.17 million square kilometres was set. This year, it has unexpectedly plunged a further 500,000 sq km to less than 3.5m sq km. "I have been predicting [the collapse of sea ice in summer months] for many years. The main cause is simply global warming: as the climate has warmed there has been less ice growth during the winter and more ice melt during the summer.
"At first this didn't [get] noticed; the summer ice limits slowly shrank back, at a rate which suggested that the ice would last another 50 years or so. But in the end the summer melt overtook the winter growth such that the entire ice sheet melts or breaks up during the summer months.
"This collapse, I predicted would occur in 2015-16 at which time the summer Arctic (August to September) would become ice-free. The final collapse towards that state is now happening and will probably be complete by those dates".
Wadhams says the implications are "terrible". "The positives are increased possibility of Arctic transport, increased access to Arctic offshore oil and gas resources. The main negative is an acceleration of global warming."
"As the sea ice retreats in summer the ocean warms up (to 7C in 2011) and this warms the seabed too. The continental shelves of the Arctic are composed of offshore permafrost, frozen sediment left over from the last ice age. As the water warms the permafrost melts and releases huge quantities of trapped methane, a very powerful greenhouse gas so this will give a big boost to global warming."

Higgs boson and neutrino
According to the Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model, particles in the vacuum acquire mass as they collide with the Higgs boson. Photons (γ) are massless because they do not interact with the Higgs boson. All particles, including electrons (e), muons (μ) and top quarks (t), change handedness when they collide with the Higgs boson; left-handed particles become right-handed and vice versa.
Experiments have shown that neutrinos (ν) are always left-handed. Since right-handed neutrinos do not exist in the Standard Model, the theory predicts that neutrinos can never acquire mass.
In one extension to the Standard Model, left- and right-handed neutrinos exist. These Dirac neutrinos acquire mass via the Higgs mechanism but right-handed neutrinos interact much more weakly than any other particles.
According to another extension of the Standard Model, extremely heavy right-handed neutrinos are created for a brief moment before they collide with the Higgs boson to produce light left-handed Majorana neutrinos.
Thus esults from several recent experiments provide indirect evidence in favor of the existence of a fourth generation neutrino. Such a neutrino with a mass m of about 50 GeV is compatible with current physical and astrophysical constraints and well motivated in the framework of superstring phenomenology.
If sufficiently stable, the existence of such a neutrino leads to a drastic change in Higgs boson physics. The dominant mode of Higgs boson decay is invisible and the branching ratios for the most promising modes of Higgs boson search are significantly reduced. And the mass of the Higgs boson is greater than 113.5 GeV if the neutrino mass is about 50 GeV.

The God particle
The God particle-Higgs boson
In mainstream media, the Higgs boson is very often referred to as "the God particle", after the title of Leon Lederman's book on the topic (1993). Although the proposed particle is both important and elusive, the epithet is strongly disliked by physicists, who regard it as misleading exaggeration. It is
not used in professional publications.
Mass of Higgs boson
It is about 133 proton masses i.e., the order of10−25 kg.
Equivalent energy= 125–127 GeV
What does Higgs boson mean for science?
1)The discovery confirms the Standard Model theory is valid. Other particles predicted by this theory
have been confirmed, but the missing Higgs boson was a glaring hole. Now that's closed.
2) Other aspects of sub-atomic physics and of the cosmos that are unexplained, like dark matter(which makes up 25% of the matter in the universe but has never been seen), dark energy (which makes up 70% of matter in the universe but also has never been located), antimatter, super symmetry (a theory that for every particle there is a heavier twin), etc. With the Higgs boson found, scientists can look at these aspects with more surety.
3) The most well-known force in the universe — gravitation —is still not fully explained. Such issues are still to be cleared with findings on Higgs boson

The Higgs boson or Higgs particle is a proposed elementary particle in the Standard
Model of particle physics. The Higgs boson is named after Peter Higgs who, along with others, proposed the mechanism thatpredicted such a particle in 1964. The existence of the Higgs
boson and the associated Higgs field explain why the other massive elementary particles
in the standard model have their mass. In this theory, the Higgs field has a non-zero
field everywhere, even in its lowest energy state. Other massive elementary particles
obtain mass through the continuous interaction with this field (however, not all
elementary particles have mass). The Higgs field interaction is the simplest mechanism
which explains why some elementary particles have mass. The Higgs boson—the smallest
possible excitation of the Higgs field—has been the target of a long search in particle
physics. One of the primary design goals of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN
inGeneva, Switzerland—one of the most complicated scientific instruments
ever built— was to test the existence of the Higgs boson and measure its
properties.

Because of its role in a fundamental property of elementary particles, the Higgs boson has
been referred to as the "God particle" in popular culture, although virtually all scientists regard
this as a hyperbole. According to the Standard Model, the Higgs particle is a boson, a type of
particle that allows multiple identical particles to exist in the same place in the same quantum
state. Furthermore, the model posits that the particle has nointrinsic spin, no electric charge,
and no colour charge. It is also very unstable, decaying almost immediately after its creation.

noting that further data and analysis were needed before the particle could be positively identified.

The existence of the Higgs boson was predicted in 1964 to explain the Higgs
The Higgs boson is named after Peter Higgs, who in 1964 wrote one of three ground-breaking papers
alongside the work of Robert Brout and François Englert and Tom Kibble, C. R. Hagen and Gerald
Guralnik covering what is now known as the Higgs mechanism and described the related Higgs
field and boson.

Technically, it is the quantum excitation of the Higgs field, and the non-zero value of the ground
state of this field gives mass to the other elementary particlessuch as quarks and electrons through
the Higgs mechanism. The Standard Model com
pletely fixes the properties of the Higgs boson, except for its mass. It is expected to have no
spin and no electric or colour charge, and it interacts with other particles through the weak i
nteraction and Yukawa-type interactionsbetween the various fermions and the Higgs field.

Because the Higgs boson is a very massive particle and decays almost immediately when
created, only a very high-energy particle accelerator can observe and record it. Experiments
to confirm and determine the nature of the Higgs boson using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
at CERN began in early 2010, and were performed at Fermilab's Tevatron until its close in late
2011. Mathematical consistency of the Standard Model requires that any mechanism capable
of generating the masses of elementary particles become visible at energies above 1.4 TeV;[6]
therefore, the LHC (designed to collide two 7 TeV proton beams, but currently running at
4 TeV each) was built to answer the question of whether or not the Higgs boson exists.[7]

On 4 July 2012, the two main experiments at the LHC (ATLAS and CMS) both reported
independently the confirmed existence of a previously unknown particle with a mass of about
125 GeV/c2 (about 133 proton masses, on the order of 10−25 kg), which is "consistent with the
Higgs boson" and widely believed to be the Higgs boson. They cautioned that further work would
be needed to confirm that it is indeed the Higgs boson (meaning that it has the theoretically
predicted properties of the Higgs boson and is not some other previously unknown particle) and,
