Monster in the Milky Way:

Hubble Tracks a Monster in the Milky Way: This image shows the star-studded center of the Milky Way towards the constellation of Sagittarius. The crowded center of our galaxy contains numerous complex and mysterious objects that are usually hidden at optical wavelengths by clouds of dust — but many are visible here in these infrared observations from Hubble.
However, the most famous cosmic object in this image still remains invisible: the monster at our galaxy’s heart called Sagittarius A*. Astronomers have observed stars spinning around this supermassive black hole (located right in the center of the image), and the black hole consuming clouds of dust as it affects its environment with its enormous gravitational pull.
Infrared observations can pierce through thick obscuring material to reveal information that is usually hidden to the optical observer. This is the best infrared image of this region ever taken with Hubble, and uses infrared archive data from Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3, taken in September 2011.

What is a constant vector?
A constant vector is one which does not change with time (or any other variable). For example, the origin (0,0,0) is constant, and the point (34,2,22) is constant. They are always in the same place.
A position vector is one that uniquely specifies the position of a point with respect to an origin. For any point P in space, we can define the position vector p = the vector from O to P (where O is the origin). This contrasts with velocity vectors etc. which represent other things.
If A is a constant vector prove that grad(r.A) = A where r is a vector too
Proof
Let r = x i + y j + z k and A = A1 i + A2 j + A3 k
r . A = A1x + A2y + A3z
grad[r . A] = ∂/∂x(A1x) i + ∂/∂y(A2y) j + ∂/∂z(A3z) k
= A1(∂x/∂x) i + A2(∂y/∂y) j + A3(∂z/∂z) k
= A1(1) i + A2(1) j + A3(1) k
grad[r . A] = A1 i + A2 j + A3 k = A
Note; since A is a constant vector ∂/∂x(A1x) = A1(∂x/∂x) and similarly for other two components.
Assignment Question
Prove that r.A is solenoidal and irrotational
r . A = A1x + A2y + A3z
grad[r . A] = ∂/∂x(A1x) i + ∂/∂y(A2y) j + ∂/∂z(A3z) k
= A1(∂x/∂x) i + A2(∂y/∂y) j + A3(∂z/∂z) k
= A1(1) i + A2(1) j + A3(1) k
grad[r . A] = A1 i + A2 j + A3 k = A
Note; since A is a constant vector ∂/∂x(A1x) = A1(∂x/∂x) and similarly for other two components.
Assignment Question
Prove that r.A is solenoidal and irrotational
(Ans: Prove dive (r.A) =0 and Curl (r.A) =0

Happy teacher's day!
Happy teacher's day!
On this teacher’s day.
September 5 is celebrated as Teacher's Day as it is Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday and he is regarded as one of the finest teachers.
Teacher is the quintessence of life and it is only through a teacher that we are what we are today. The first teacher in our life is our mother, and then comes the father. They teach us, take care of us and raise us to be good human beings prepared to face the world. The hands that raise the child a thousand times and the hands that rock the cradle a thousand rules the world. Our parents teach us to follow discipline and to learn the importance of values and respect in life. Each parent has his or her role to play and ideas to contribute. We are students in every step of life. As children, we learn from parents and the parents are our very first teachers.
Then we go to school and there we learn from our teachers. We learn the basics of every language from our teachers. They teach us science, mathematics, social studies and what else. In colleges too we are supplemented with our beloved teachers. It is indeed a pleasure and privilege to be with such learned people who selflessly teach us the art of science, the beauty of the surroundings and the history of the world. Teachers are gems and we cherish them forever.
Our next stage is the world where we start a career. Our team manager is our teacher. There we realize the importance of all the values, and rules set down by our parents at that young age. Suddenly, the discipline of putting things back in place, of going to bed on time, of praying when we wake up, all begins to make sense. We realize that time is money and we stop wasting time.
As we move further on in life, we settle down to a happy family life. Our spouse becomes our teacher. We learn a lot from him or her. She or he comes from a different background and we learn the art of adjustment and compromise. We share, care and begin to learn to share our personality with another person gradually we become parents. Our learning does not end here. We begin to learn from children. Child is the father of man- this Wordsworth statement perhaps means that the qualities exhibited by a child will deepen and appear in a marked form when the child grows up into a man. By observing and studying the behaviour, the inclinations, the preferences, the prejudices and the tendencies of child we can form an idea as to what sort of man he will develop into. We begin to behave ourself, we stop swearing and we do not indulge in bad habits. We learn from children. They are our best teachers.
As we grow old, we look back rocking our experiences back and forth. We realize that Teachers are Gems, they are important and they are here to make us what we are today. We are all students of one common teacher – LIFE. Life is the biggest teacher.
So on this teacher’s day let us all salute our loved, respected and amazing teachers!

The Beta Decay
β− decay.
An unstable atomic nucleus with an excess of neutrons may undergo β− decay, where a neutron is converted into a proton, an electron and an electron-type anti-neutrino (the antiparticle of the neutrino).
This process is mediated by the weak interaction. The neutron turns into a proton through the emission of a virtual W− boson. At the quark level, W− emission turns a down-type quark into an up-type quark, turning a neutron (one up quark and two down quarks) into a proton (two up quarks and one down quark). The virtual W− boson then decays into an electron and an anti-neutrino.
Sourav Poudel asked about Beta Decay. If anyone has any vital information about beta decay, please share with us.

The geometric shape of a galactic core

The geometric shape of a galactic core, or a black hole. Why would the shape be tornadic or whirl pool like. The gravitational pull would be from the singularity and pull equally from all directions and not simply 360 degrees on a plane

Paul Dirac
Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born on 8th August, 1902, at Bristol, England.
"Dirac's work was concerned with the mathematical and theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics.
He began work on the new quantum mechanics as soon as it was introduced by Heisenberg in 1925 - independently producing a mathematical equivalent which consisted essentially of a noncommutative algebra for calculating atomic properties - and wrote a series of papers on the subject, published mainly in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, leading up to his relativistic theory of the electron (1928) and the theory of holes (1930). This latter theory required the existence of a positive particle having the same mass and charge as the known (negative) electron. This, the positron was discovered experimentally at a later date (1932) by C. D. Anderson, while its existence was likewise proved by Blackett and Occhialini (1933 ) in the phenomena of "pair production" and "annihilation".
In early 20th century Paul Dirac, came up with an equation that had a negative energy solution that was simply ignored.

The Supernova

On July 4, 1054 the SN 1054 supernova was recorded by the Chinese, Arab and possibly Native Americans near the star Tauri. For 23 days it remains bright enough to be seen in daylight!!! Today, from advanced telescopes, it can be seen as remnants that form the Crab Nebula (NGC 1952).
Euler Identity

Euler's Identity
An equation that links several important numbers in mathematics in an unexpected way. Euler's identity is named after the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler.
The paper below explains how to obtain the Euler's formula, you only need a basic calculus background, limits, differentials, Integrals, and geormetry.
Carbon nanotubes

Carbon Nanotubes Increase Light Absorption in Thin-Film Solar Cells
"Carbon nanotubes could be highly attractive candidates for the primary light-absorbing component in a solar cell because they are strong light absorbers in addition to having high charge transport mobility and solution-processability. Nanotubes are also more air stable than most other semiconducting conjugated carbon materials."
Carbon nanotubes absorb strongly in tunable spectral bands, so they could enable new types of applications, e.g. they could be used as very sensitive photodetectors.

Meteor Shower As Seen From Space & From Earth
Several thousand meteors hit Earth everyday, most of them are the size of a grain of rice or smaller. A few each day may be the size of a baseball or occasionally the size of a basketball. Once a week or so, the Earth is hit by a rock the size of a car, and once every few months, we get hit by something the size of a house.

Fermat last theorem proved!
Here is this man named Sir Andrew John Wiles who proved the famous enigma and almost a 300 years old Fermat last theorem which simply states that no three positive integers a, b and c can satisfy the equation a^n+ b^n=c^n
if n is an integer greater than two Fermet. The things were not so good for this great figure when he challenged Fermet Last theorem which he found interesting from the age of eight. Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem is a proof of the modularity theorem for semistable elliptic curves release together with Ribet's theorem, provides a proof for Fermat's Last Theorem. Both Fermat's Last Theorem and the Modularity Theorem were almost universally considered inaccessible to proof by contemporaneous mathematicians (meaning, impossible or virtually impossible to prove using current knowledge). Wiles first announced his proof in June 1993 in a version that was soon recognized as having a serious gap in a key point.Andrew Wiles then corrected it, in part via collaboration with a colleague, and the final, widely accepted, version was released by Wiles in September 1994, and formally published in 1995. The proof uses many techniques from algebraic geometry and number theory, and has many ramifications in these branches

New light on ‘dark matter’
APThe International Space Station seen in the sunlight. A $2 billion cosmic ray detector on the International Space Station has found the footprint of something that could be dark matter.
An international experiment aboard the International Space Station (ISS) today reported the observation of an excess of positrons in the cosmic ray flux, the source of which could be the elusive dark matter.
This forms the most important part of the first results from the experiment, called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), which were reported by the experiment’s spokesperson, Nobel Laureate Samuel Ting of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the meeting of the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS) at Boston, Massachusetts.
The mysterious dark matter, which is believed to account for a quarter of the universe’s mass-energy balance and is distributed isotropically — invariant with respect to direction — in the space, can be observed indirectly through its gravitational interaction with visible matter but is yet to be directly detected.
The search for dark matter is one of the objectives of this space-borne AMS even as it is being actively searched for in ground-based experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and other experiments in deep underground experiments.
The instrument is basically a giant magnet and an antimatter detector attached to the outside of the ISS. It is the most powerful and sensitive particle spectrometer ever deployed in space. It is designed to study the cosmic ray particles, which are charged high-energy particles that permeate space, before they have a chance to interact with the Earth’s atmosphere.
The first AMS results are based on the analysis of about 25 billion recorded primary cosmic ray events. The events were recorded between May 19, 2011 and December 10, 2012. Of these, an unprecedented 6.8 million were unambiguously identified as electrons and their antimatter counterparts, positrons, observed in the energy range 0.5 Giga electron-Volt (GeV) to 350 GeV. Of these 6.8 million particles, more than 400,000 were positrons. This is the largest number of energetic antimatter particles directly measured and analysed from space.
The data shows that the number of positrons, as a fraction of the total number of electrons and positrons, first decreases from 0.5 GeV to 10 GeV and then steadily increases from 10 GeV to 250 GeV. This is not the first time that positron excess in cosmic ray flux has been seen in space. At least two space missions, the Payload for Antimatter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) and the Fermi space telescope, have already seen hints of such an antimatter excess, but they did not go up to the energy levels that AMS has done, and that too with great precision, which seems to provide some hints of the origin of this excess.
That hint, according to the researchers, comes from the fact that the rate of growth of the positron fraction indicates a decrease by an order of magnitude from 20 GeV to 250 GeV and then the fraction seems to flatten at energies above 250 GeV. Ting said that more data was needed to conclusively establish that flattening of the curve.
The other interesting thing is that the positron fraction shows no anisotropy, which means that the positrons are not coming from a preferred direction in space. “Together, these features show evidence of a new physics phenomenon,” the researchers have contended.
The positron ratio is a key parameter in the search for dark matter. Some theories, such as supersymmetry, predict that dark mater particles will collide and annihilate in space, producing an excess of positrons that detectors such as the AMS would be able to detect. The AMS data also seems to fit perfectly the predictions of models based on such theories.
Supersymmetric theories also predict a cut-off of positrons at higher energies, basically limited by the mass of dark matter particles, and this is yet to be observed. As AMS probes higher energies up to tera electron-Volt (Tev) scale, which it is capable of, it is to be seen whether the apparent flattening of positron fraction above 250 GeV continues and eventually leads to a cut-off.
As of now, however, the AMS experiment can not yet conclusively rule out the other possible explanation for this excess, which are the pulsars distributed around the galactic plane. Pulsars are rotating neutron stars with very high magnetic fields, which can occur in remnants of supernova explosions as isolated objects or as binary systems.
“As the most precise measurement of the cosmic ray positron flux to date, …over the coming months, AMS will be able to tell us conclusively whether these positrons are a signal for dark matter, or whether they have some other origin.”

![Paul Dirac
